I love Julia Cameron’s work and return to her books on creativity again and again。 But this isn’t her best work。 Useful thoughts on listening are mixed with far too much on her dog, her friends, her life。

Excellent book

Lynne

Unlimited & overdrawn stories of little value about her dog。 Listening to this on audio definitely tested my listening skills。 Grossly verbose with minimal points of conclusion。Her editor should be prosecuted。

This is the fourth Julia Cameron book I've used in an online group study with other creatives over the past several months。 The study has deepened my connection with the Creator and increased my self confidence as a working writer。 I enjoy listening to podcast interviews with Cameron that reinforce what she has to say in her books。 I still continue with the 3 morning pages each day and the art date each week。 Now, I add becoming a better listener to my tool box。 This is the fourth Julia Cameron book I've used in an online group study with other creatives over the past several months。 The study has deepened my connection with the Creator and increased my self confidence as a working writer。 I enjoy listening to podcast interviews with Cameron that reinforce what she has to say in her books。 I still continue with the 3 morning pages each day and the art date each week。 Now, I add becoming a better listener to my tool box。 。。。more

I began this book, knowing that it was a sort of continuation of the concept of the Artist's way。 I read most of it, skimming to get the gist of it。 I am pleased that the author is pursuing this aspect。 I began this book, knowing that it was a sort of continuation of the concept of the Artist's way。 I read most of it, skimming to get the gist of it。 I am pleased that the author is pursuing this aspect。 。。。more

On morning pages: “examining our lives, we find our lives to be worth examining。”Deep wisdom hidden beneath a lot of fluff! Almost gave it 2 stars but the section on listening in conversation was a much needed reminder。 “ we listen with our whole body in a way that makes the speaker comfortable and relaxed。 We do not interrupt and we allow room for the speaker to surprise us with what they say。”I also started doing morning pages and love it!

It’s hard to rate this book fairly as I, like many creatives, have been positively influenced by The Artist’s Way and the simple tools of Morning Pages and Artist Dates。 The Sound of Paper remains my go-to when I’m burned out and creatively empty。 So I came into this book with high expectations。 First of all, yes, there are a LOT of passages about her dog。 Those didn’t bother me too much as I’m a dog lover。 Surprisingly, it created a warm, cozy environment where I could almost feel the silence i It’s hard to rate this book fairly as I, like many creatives, have been positively influenced by The Artist’s Way and the simple tools of Morning Pages and Artist Dates。 The Sound of Paper remains my go-to when I’m burned out and creatively empty。 So I came into this book with high expectations。 First of all, yes, there are a LOT of passages about her dog。 Those didn’t bother me too much as I’m a dog lover。 Surprisingly, it created a warm, cozy environment where I could almost feel the silence in her quaint little house。 (Admittedly though, if I never see the words “gravlax” or “salmon” again, it will be too soon。 Pretentious much?)But there’s a different feel to this book… a grasping neediness and loneliness, like she’s trying too hard to seem happy in her new home with her lovely garden and cute dog。 In a book about silence, she seems desperate to fill it with mundane conversations from an endless parade of glamorous friends。 She mentions the phone ringing and leaping to answer it, as if she can’t bear to be alone。 She is breathless, eager, desperate, insecure。 Each friend reassures her and it fills her briefly, then she’s off to talk to the dead, call up her heroes (“conversations” with Carl Jung are particularly weird), anything that keeps her talking, talking, talking。 But my chief complaint with this book is that the pages are filled with the opinions and habits of people I’ve never heard of who don’t matter。 Some chef, some gardener, some interior designer waxing poetic about silence。 I paid for her thoughts, her experiences, her insight, not the opinions of her peanut gallery entourage。 I’d even accept the thoughts and habits of other writers or figures in history。 I don’t care what her yoga teacher thinks。 This book was warm and peaceful in places and gratingly tedious in others, but mostly it was just vapid and rushed。 The chapter about the landline problems almost ended me。 I have read almost all of Cameron’s books, and I will buy her books in the future, but as a longtime reader, I’m worried about her。 She doesn’t seem happy at all, and I suspect that’s why her poor little dog is so jumpy and bark-happy。 It feels her unease and tension。It makes me wonder if she’s actually listening to herself。 If her friends are as wonderful as she says, someone needs to step in and ask her if she’s truly following her heart, because something isn’t working。 For her sake, I hope she listens, because I feel her sobriety and possibly her mental health are at stake。I get a truly worrisome vibe from this book。 She doesn’t sound happy, she doesn’t sound well, and she doesn’t sound like she has an authentic friend in the world willing to do more than just give her tidbits of verbal gravlax。 I hope my intuitions are wrong。 New readers would do well to steer clear of this hot mess。 Fans will likely be worried, as I am。 This isn’t at all the Julia Cameron we know and admire。 And that’s a real shame。 。。。more

I learned a few good things from this book。 But looking at the average rating people give it, I'm not sure if we can all trust the voices (that say for instance 'you are doing well, your writing will be great')。 All in all it seems a bit rushed: like she was on a roll during the first few chapters, but then the chapters get very short。 I learned a few good things from this book。 But looking at the average rating people give it, I'm not sure if we can all trust the voices (that say for instance 'you are doing well, your writing will be great')。 All in all it seems a bit rushed: like she was on a roll during the first few chapters, but then the chapters get very short。 。。。more

HIGHLIGHTS: 1。 Morning pages, Artist’s dates, and walks。2。 Allow people to finish their thoughts without interruption or assuming you know how to finish their sentences。 3, unsolicited advice kills conversation。4。 Speak up for yourself when someone tries to speak down to you。5。 Listen to guidance from loved ones who have passed。 6。 Listen to the sound of diligence。 We come in contact with wisdom。

It's been ages since I read The Artist's Way or The Right to Write。 Many reviewers comment that The Listening Path is just a rehash of her previous works。 I found it just the right nudge I needed to take up Morning Pages again, and to tune in mindfully to my surroundings。 I could have done with less about her spoiled little dog, but overall enjoyed。 It's been ages since I read The Artist's Way or The Right to Write。 Many reviewers comment that The Listening Path is just a rehash of her previous works。 I found it just the right nudge I needed to take up Morning Pages again, and to tune in mindfully to my surroundings。 I could have done with less about her spoiled little dog, but overall enjoyed。 。。。more

I’m intrigued enough to now purchase a copy so I can take the six weeks to practice my listening。 Three stars as there was lots of unnecessary detail like feeding the dog salmon for the billionth time 😆

I wanted to read this book because it was mentioned in an article I read recently on creativity。 The practice of Morning Pages came up, and I was intrigued。 But I just can't。 I wanted to stop reading as soon as I started。 I made it to page 80 by allowing myself the mercy of skimming, but。。。 It's just so boring。 I realize I'm doing it wrong: it's a 6-week program。 I wanted to zoom through and glean。 But it reads like a personal diary — and, though I assume it's meant to promote a meditative minds I wanted to read this book because it was mentioned in an article I read recently on creativity。 The practice of Morning Pages came up, and I was intrigued。 But I just can't。 I wanted to stop reading as soon as I started。 I made it to page 80 by allowing myself the mercy of skimming, but。。。 It's just so boring。 I realize I'm doing it wrong: it's a 6-week program。 I wanted to zoom through and glean。 But it reads like a personal diary — and, though I assume it's meant to promote a meditative mindset, comes off like Ms。 Cameron loves to hear herself speak。 Excruciatingly。 Slowly。 And with lots of name-dropping。 It's like being trapped in a classroom with a self-indulgent old writing professor who loves nothing more than to drone endlessly about her personal life and wisdom with generous numbers of boring little exemplary anecdotes。 Perhaps this is unfair。 But it's how I experienced this book。Ms。 Cameron also believes in using straight up too many words。 In describing an interview with a friend: "John continues thoughtfully"。。。 "John pauses after this confession"。。。 "He comments further"。。。 "John has a final, rueful thought。" Again: perhaps this is unfair。 How else does one narrate an interview? I don't know。 All I know is I hated reading this。NOTE TO SELF: Since I didn't finish it, I'm not marking dates read to count toward my 2022 Reading Challenge。 。。。more

I think I was not the ideal audience for this book。 Some concepts are interesting, but I think I would have gotten them from the original Artist’s Way book instead。 Also the author just writes too much like this is her general diary。

Kerry

I’m so disappointed in this book。

Amerikkalainen self-help-kirja luoville henkilöille。 Kuuntelin Kuuntelemisen polun ja huomasin kyllä, että yhtäkkiä todellakin kuuntlein tarkemmin, mitä ympärilläni on。 Mutta suhtaudun pienellä varauksella tämän tyyppisiin kirjoihin, joissa on keittiöpsykologiaa, mutta ei tieteellistä psykologiaa。 Käytän itsekin luovan kirjoittamisen ohjaamisen tukena Cameronin ajatuksia, mutta tahtoisin löytää lisää samantyyppisiä meillä julkaisemattomia oppaita。

I had higher hopes for this, but found it a little thin。 Lots and lots of personal anecdotes, so might have been better marketed as a Julia Cameron memoir, rather than ground-breaking skill building material。Still, it was interesting and worth the skim to the end。 And a Julia Cameron memoir is not a bad idea at all, come to think of it。

In the times when we are limiting our outside excursions, it is good to be reminded about things we can do to enrich each day。 Journal, go on solo play dates to fill ourselves up with new ideas, and get some quiet exercise。 And listen to understand, with a little space-time for complete thoughts and respect。 Listen to nature, others, yourself, your ancestors, mentor heroes, and the silence。 Excellent action prompts and sidebar quotations。

This book is encouraging, lovely, and warm, as Cameron's work always is。 Having said that, if you've read The Artist's Way, you know most of the major points in this book as well。 I enjoyed spending some more time with this Master teacher。 This book is encouraging, lovely, and warm, as Cameron's work always is。 Having said that, if you've read The Artist's Way, you know most of the major points in this book as well。 I enjoyed spending some more time with this Master teacher。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book and the suggested exercises in it。 Like most people, I didn’t realize how powerful listening can be。 Julia helped me see how simple and powerful deep listening can be。 I enjoyed exploring the different ways to listen。 I can see myself reading again and seeing what new things I’ll discover。

Morning pages and take walks often。。。。best advice in the book。 Things got a little flakey, or "woo woo" as the author puts it, for me at Weeks 5 and 6。 I'm sure the author would tell me I'm not being open-minded enough, but I can't imagine myself ever (view spoiler)[ asking to hear the voices of my deceased loved ones or heroes/heroines for guidance。 (hide spoiler)] No judgement for those who find this helpful, it's just not for me。 There's also *a lot* about the author's dog。 I love my dog too Morning pages and take walks often。。。。best advice in the book。 Things got a little flakey, or "woo woo" as the author puts it, for me at Weeks 5 and 6。 I'm sure the author would tell me I'm not being open-minded enough, but I can't imagine myself ever (view spoiler)[ asking to hear the voices of my deceased loved ones or heroes/heroines for guidance。 (hide spoiler)] No judgement for those who find this helpful, it's just not for me。 There's also *a lot* about the author's dog。 I love my dog too, but I know way more about the author's dog Lily now than I really need to know。 。。。more

This was a personal reflection read for me。 Although I think everyone would benefit creativity wise and also with their personal listening skills, there will be several who will find it hard making it through what some might think of as fluff。I found it very inspiring at this juncture of life。

This is a vote based on preference for style: this author isn’t to my preference, although she may well be perfect for others。 I did however take some tit-bits and insights that I’m applying to my daily activities, with positive outcomes so far, which put it to a 3 star rating。

Terri

I love Cameron’s The Artist’s Way (5 stars), but this new book is redundant at best。 She emphasizes listening, but the actual content is drawn out, filled with Julia’s process of her interviews with many people who embrace a listening life。

Summer Hanson

Very repetitive but a good reminder that listening is good
